Mid-week Inspiration,

Rain and thunderstorms; this is our weather here in the Okanagan this June.  The creek runs high with every storm; coming up as much as a foot or more with each passing onslaught of rain.  If we had no trees these would each be flash floods, Vernon would be a very different place.

I never cease to feel wonder as I look upon the power of nature.  Ever the same yet ever in flux; cycles within cycles, within cycles; life returns to its point of origin while ever renewed in its details.  Often, the human species pretends to itself that it is beyond this force of nature.  Most science fiction plays with these ‘power concepts’.

Ideas such as extending life to unknown lengths, growing empires out ofbalance with nature and discovering paradises elsewhere because we haveconsumed or destroyed ‘our own’, are common themes. Far be it from me to challenge the future, but it cannot be done.Neither we nor any other part of this universe can grow beyond the power of these natural cycles for we are all contained within this infinite wonder.

As we break through one sphere of limitation we enter into another.   We are bound by the laws of nature on visible and invisiblelevels.  All we are really capable of is greater understanding.  We can do more as we know more and as we work within the very laws that defineus.  We can grow richer and more productive in our own lives and as a society by working within the bounds of these universal laws.  When weattempt to short circuit these cycles by imposing our will upon lifeitself, be it individual or global we ensure an equal and responding action.

No matter what religion we may adhere to the Universe, the divine Father, will play no favorites.  Violence shall forever begetviolence, and be it one year or a thousand, our empires of sand will come down.  This is no prediction; it is merely recognition of inexorable and natural laws.

The law of synchronicity I call it, which maintains the harmonious turnof the galaxies, planets and seasons is ever at work and can be used byconscious endeavor in our individual lives.  Most of us in a day of work don’t think for a moment how we might be in harmony with the cycles ofnature.  For the vast majority harmony is something that only comes into force when we see our lives falling into chaos.

Another law that we as a society are only beginning to remember is the law of conservation.  The law of conservation on a human level shows upin the work/leisure ratio.  It also shows up in our ability to recycle and conserve.  What ever happened to the measure of Thoreau which statedthat an object should only be replaced if three criteria are met; 1) the new object is less expensive, 2) the new object saves time and 3) thenew object is better built.

Today we recognize the imbalance as we spend more and more time working to pay for the costs of our freedoms.  Taxes, illegal in the original constitution of our Nation, now equal anywhere from 25% to over 50% of our gross income.  Medicine has extended the length of our lives but hasit increased the quality of life?
