Mid-week Inspiration,

Sometimes I need to speak of things that are beyond the scope of inner growth.
We often get so caught within our insular little worlds that we think the world begins and ends in the comfort of our homes, our little lives; whether we have enough food, pleasure and work.  We become negligent in our recognition of the needs of others; their calls for help.  It seems that to the best of us at times apathy descends.

And then some day we are awakened to the power of nature as it reminds us of our own negligence and greed.  Forces of nature strike and we humans shake our befuddled heads wondering again how God could fail us.  Or we think; ‘thank God’ it didn’t happen to me.  Or maybe, God is on my side and such superstitious nonsense.  There is no God that is for one at the cost of another and always somehow some way the scales are balanced.  It has been taught through the ages that we are one in the eyes of the Divine; that Gods love is equally available to all.  Yet a disaster such as this hurricane Katrina sends people scrambling to their televisions.

We people around the world have become engrossed by the events either giving or not in their actions while being hoodwinked by our distraction.  We see all the dramas down south.  The horrors of apathy and cruelty that cataclysmic events bring out in the few are made to appear as the norm and we sit around at home and tut tut, maybe even giving much to compensate.  Meanwhile we are being taken by those very ones who can do the most to help.  The multinationals, whose quarterly profits after they have used every loophole to hide them, still show more increase than most countries of the world.  Those same corporations give a pittance in aid while raising gas prices the world over.  And how do they justify it? they don’t, because it is assured that the little person will not do anything.  Those same corporations are the leading contributors to ‘global warming’ which it is strongly argued is largely the cause of the freak weather patterns and catastrophic events. We call this phenomenon ‘global warming and think of pansies and buttercups coming up earlier in the spring.  Maybe we should stop deceiving ourselves and call it global scorching with an awareness to the ever increasing instability of those patterns.

Becoming the power we can be in this world is about taking responsibility for the things that occur in our lives, our homes and our world.  It is about being honest with ourselves.  I truly believe that in some measure every adult by our actions and thoughts is partly responsible for the events in the Southern States.  I believe it is time we start talking about how we can change and improve what is happening in our world rather than feeling sorry for what is happening over there somewhere.

The only voice we truly have as a community is how responsibly we collectively use our money.  Do we do what the advertising tells us?  Do we buy the latest new toys? Shop at the most convenient place? Always buy the cheapest thing knowing exactly what third world sweat shop produced it?   Or do we seek to make a difference such as considering to buy second hand? Do we shop locally?  Do we buy organic foods, walk where we can, offer others rides, walk more, drive less, thank others and praise them?

Before we give food and money, and that is good for those who are able, we need to remember to ask ourselves how we can make a difference today through our home and community.  After all if the American government can afford to spend tens of billions of dollars on its war machine around the world it certainly must have the resources to set peoples lives right in its own country.  Sometimes we must allow others to take responsibility, this may be one of those times.  Sometimes the best way to truly give globally is to give locally.
In Love and Light,
