Mid-week Inspiration, Good Morning Beloved Friends, Once a person told me of a study done of people in the work force. They were asked three questions; first they were asked if they earned enough money. They almost unanimously responded with "No". For the second question they were asked their average income. As we would expect it varied quite a lot. Some earned as little as ten thousand a year while others earned over a hundred thousand. The curiosity was in the response to the third question. How much more would they need to feel comfortable with their income? Most of them responded with 'about double' their present income. I suspect that same study would find the same results if it were done again among almost any population of the world. Two issues come into play here determining the results. First we have a population of spiritually impoverished people. By this I mean that most of us live in a perpetual state of dissatisfaction, believing that more will be better. While of itself this is good it is important to understand that the God of your choice is in no way bound by such limitations. Limitations are ours because we don't believe that there could possibly be anything out there that could or would (or even would care enough to) free us from our limitations. Which brings us back to spiritual impoverishment. What we don't seem to understand is that the outermost God and the innermost God must be the same. In every human there must be an indwelling presence, which is infinite, absolute and all loving. An infinite God must be as present within as without or it can not be infinite. For most people this concept is virtually incomprehensible, yet it is no less true. There are many things in our lives, that each of us accepts as commonplace, even as we acknowledge the proof only by the effects or the word of an outside authority. For most people the workings of nuclear physics or even electricity are incomprehensible yet we don't doubt their veracity. So why would we doubt an indwelling presence? Because very simply, we are absolutely convinced that the separation of objects our eyes project to our minds is all there is. We walk through an empty room that we absolutely know is not empty, yet we completely discount what we don’t see. ‘Empty’ space is most of what we have; it fills the universe, our attics, basements and skies. Therefore if God is truly infinite, and I hold this as the first foundation of every modern, practiced and growing religion the world over, then God will be found mostly in the ‘emptiness’. It is only that presence that can fill the emptiness, within or without. So although money is good to have and use, and none deserve lack of any kind, still true prosperity is the discovery of God within. No matter how much a person possesses if he or she lacks awareness of this abundance s/he will live in a mental state of poverty. This is the message behind the story of the prodigal son; we must awaken to the riches within before we can appreciate the abundance at hand. May you, this week discover the abundance in your heart; you truly are already wealthy beyond measure. Blessings, |
