Today I share a story that is familiar to many. Yet as common as you will find it, there is an opportunity in it for our growth.

I live in an idyllic spot, as far as urban settings go it could hardly get any better.  On the east side of our yard we have a wildlife sanctuary, a part of Vernon’s park system.  On the north side of our property we have a year round creek.  The creek has a wildlife habitat buffer of ten to thirty meters on each side, this means that no one can cut down trees or build next to the creek ‘hypothetically’.

As many in this part of the world can attest we live in a wealthy and popular summer destination place.  I am made very aware of this because in my home we have a guest bedroom. This makes our home a natural landing for friends and family.  Last week alone we had seven people stay over for at least one night. 

When I start wondering where all these people are coming from and when Hannah, my wonderful wife, and I will have our home back to ourselves I am reminded of a Jewish fable that impressed me many years ago.

Every day another person is diagnosed with an addiction, labeled with an –ism or determined to have some behavioral disorder.  The nature of our species seems to be to compartmentalize every experience and situation.  We want to have a name for it; whatever the problem, our first duty is to give it a name.  If we don’t call it something then it doesn’t exist and that would not be acceptable; we want a name for our discomfort.

On the strength of our opinions and beliefs we daily pass judgment upon our world, incarcerating it or setting it free. 

When we look at another person and somehow see their suffering, ignorance, righteousness or any other such moral whitewash we perpetuate the alienation of a people and unconsciously justify confrontation. 

When we see another person from the perspective of our own need to be correct we often demoralize the gifts they bring.  We see those gifts as judgments of our own choices and then we are apt to see wrongness in benign actions.
