Winter is coming on and here in the sunny Okanagan (and today it is) the temperatures are dropping.  A couple nights ago I picked up my son returning from Mexico at the airport.  Shorts, t-shirt and suntanned, he was oblivious to the cold, or at least young enough not to particularly care.

Things change, it’s a given. Within moments the weather, the lighting and our surroundings in general will change.   The planets and stars move from instant to instant.  Moods and manners change.  Life appears fickle, constantly carrying us into a new experience, sometimes somewhat expected yet often unexpected.

Today is my father’s birthday, in my heart that is cause for celebration.  I consider myself blessed not only with my relationship with my father today but also with my childhood relationship with him.

 

Yes there were a few years when I had the usual anger of a teenager toward his father, back when I thought he was supposed to be perfect and I found out he wasn’t.  Back when I thought that I was right about all my opinions.  Inevitably one day, I don’t know exactly when, I discovered I didn’t know everything, I discovered I was fallible.  That is probably the first phase of adulthood.  Then I started to rediscover my father.

Was it a happy Halloween?  

 

It was for me; I went out with my love; my wife.  We saw a movie; a biography of a talented French Singer Edith Piaff.  She lived the kind of life made classic by successful artists in the music industry; she rose like a rocket out of the darker dingier side of French life and, after a few short years on the center stages of the world, burned out and died at the age of fourty-eight.
